Art is Alive Among Burnaby’s Youth
by Sheliza Mitha
Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.”
Judging from my recent visit at the Burnaby Art Gallery (BAG), it quickly became clear that our youth is being dutifully nurtured and prepared for their future – especially when it comes to the artistic genre. From now through May 20th, the BAG is showcasing some of the inspiring and awe-inspiring artwork created by Burnaby students from grades eight through 12 in the annual Arts Alive exhibit. Renee Van Halm Cross Cutting/Inside Out at Burnaby Art Gallery
by Lima Al-Azzeh
Thursday’s opening reception for Renee Van Halm’s exhibit at the Burnaby Art Gallery, Cross Cutting/Inside Out was an exciting survey of Van Halm’s works on paper. As the title promises, viewers were given an insight into Van Halm’s artistic inspiration and aesthetic, which involved a lot of in-depth, focused views on architecture and illuminating the pulse and life behind seemingly static scenarios.

The Shop-a-thon for Moms: A Mother of a Day
by Sheliza Mitha
This weekend, I had a chance to visit the Shop-a-thon for Moms at the Vancouver Firefighters’ Convention Hall next to Metropolis at Metrotown in Burnaby – and believe me when I say that it was nothing less than a shopping Mecca for moms everywhere. Not to mention, everything was up to 80% off, so that means deals, deals and more deals.
Catered to and created for moms, it was one of the most relaxing and stress-free shopping experiences I’ve had in a long while.

Footlight Theatre Presents the Wizard of Oz at Michael J. Fox Theatre
by Tourism Burnaby Staff
Footlight theatre’s presentation of The Wizard of Oz at the Michael J. Fox theatre defies any stereotypes one might have about “community theatre”. This production was every bit as professional, as entertaining and as seamless as any Broadway show put on by a big name company. If you haven’t got your tickets already, you shouldn’t wait much longer.

Off to see the Wizard – Part I
by Lima Al-Azzeh
In a brief conversation with Footlight Theatre’s Wizard of Oz director Lalainia Lindbjerg Strelau she said that the only thing audiences should expect from this performance is a lot of surprises. One surprise we’re not shy to tell is that the lead role of Dorothy Gale will be played by a mega TV, Film and Theatre professional … who’s only 12 years old. Despite her youth, Michelle Creber is an accomplished performer with many credits to her name already, and she’s more than adept at mastering the challenging role of Dorothy.
The show premieres this Friday at the Michael J. Fox Theatre, and despite the hubbub of preparing for this big event, Creber kindly sat down to answer some of our questions. Without further ado, we present the fabulously talented Michelle Creber. Continue reading →
