European Festival at Swangard Stadium
by Sheliza Mitha
This year, explore Europe without the arduous security checks, annoying jetlag and high costs of air travel. How? The 15th Annual European Festival at Burnaby’s Swangard Stadium on May 26th offers the perfect way to celebrate and experience Europe at your doorstep.
Previously held at the Scandinavian Community Centre, this year’s festival proves to be bigger than ever with its new venue at Swangard Stadium, which offers thousands of covered seats in the Grand Stand from which to comfortably watch all the entertainment (just in case the weather gets a bit too hot or wet).
Representing the four “corners” of Europe, the festival brings together some 30 countries in this daylong cultural festival of food, fun and performances. Some of the new participating countries at this year’s event are Azerbaijan and Slovenia. France is also making a return to the festival after being away for several years.

7 Ways to Get Away: Music, Arts & Culture – Rockin’ the Blues
by Sheliza Mitha
k.d. lang. For many, the promise of hearing this iconic artist sing live and in person is enough of a draw. But, as usual (and for the past 11 years), the Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival offers so much more. Though k.d. lang and the Siss Boom Bang was the headlining act at this year’s Blues Festival, lang was joined by some of the world’s most talented blues and roots musicians from around the world.

May Day at Rhodofest
by Sheliza Mitha
Deer Lake Park played host to Burnaby’s 23rd Annual Rhododendron Festival (also known as Rhodofest) this past Sunday in honour of the city’s official flower.
But, in my opinion, Rhodofest does more than celebrate this colourful plant – it celebrates the season. Continue reading →

Culture Blast: An Arts Explosion – Burnaby Village Museum
by Lima Al-Azzeh
One of my favourite parts of Culture Blast was that I got to acquaint myself with the charming Burnaby Village Museum. There was face painting and craft making and of course, a long lineup for a ride on the beautiful vintage carousel! This summer the Burnaby Village Museum proudly celebrates 40 years of service to the city, community and province. Throughout the years, the museum has been a cornerstone in educating both tourists and locals about local and regional heritage and history; it also has quite a rich history of its own. A lesser-known fact about Culture Blast: An Arts Explosion, the one-day arts festival to be held in Deer Lake Park on February 20th, 2011 (12 – 5 pm), is that it’s funded by a provincial project supporting “B.C. Spirit Festivals”. Over $1 million in funding has been distributed to 49 communities in B.C. in order for them to host these festivals, celebrating their city’s and town’s local arts and cultural organizations. The spirit festivals are also held in order to commemorate the success of the 2010 Olympics and honour its role in celebrating B.C.’s culture. The Burnaby Arts Council applied to be a part of this program and their hard work has paid off, in the form of the Culture Blast! Continue reading →

A Merry “Go-Around” at Burnaby Village Museum’s Fall Fair
by Sheliza Mitha
We shucked corn. Raced in a relay. Dropped bean bags into barrels. Watched some amazingly talented dogs jump through hoops. Took in an authentic Vaudeville show – complete with corny jokes. Boarded a tram from the 1800s. And rode on a vintage 1912 carousel.
Where was all this? Continue reading →
