by Sheliza Mitha
Musician Randy Ponzio and Canadian pop legend Odds rocked the house on Friday night for the Shadbolt Centre’s third annual Live at the ‘Bolt event. More than an event, Live at the ‘Bolt was a concert – a party, really – that commemorated another successful year of live theatre, music and dance performances at the city’s premier, award-winning arts and cultural centre. Monogatari: Tales of Powell Street
by Nicole Clark
Walking into a symbolic Powell Street of the past, visitors of the Monogatari: Tales of Powell Street exhibit are reminded of the vibrant area that many Japanese called home from 1920 to 1941.
“There were dozens of Japanese communities on the western seaboard, but Powell Street was the nerve centre,” said guide Bryan Akazawa. Continue reading →

Burnaby Farmers Market
by Mana Mansour
A sure sign of summer being right around the corner is the start of Farmers Markets across the Lower Mainland. These seasonal markets have popped up all over the place, and are a great alternative to shopping at your local grocery store. Everything is fresh,
locally grown (usually no more than 100 km away), and more than often, completely unique (where else can you get curries and salsas made from authentic family recipes?). And now, Burnaby Farmers Market has moved right into the Burnaby Village Museum on Saturdays until October. Continue reading →

Play On! The Canadian Street Hockey Tournament
by Lima Al-Azzeh
It’s a great season for hockey lovin’ and everyone was feeling the spirit this past weekend at Hockey Night in Canada’s event Play On! The Canadian Street Hockey Tournament. Adult and kid teams flexed their hockey muscles out on the street rinks and one special game was even given the celebrity treatment, inviting prominent lower mainland figures to show us what they’re made of. Memorable moments included getting Mr. O’ Canada himself to sing the national anthem and watching a former Canucks player live in action! Continue reading →

BVM 40th Anniversary
by Mana Mansour
It’s hard to imagine, but the Burnaby Village Museum is only celebrating its 40th anniversary. If you’ve visited the museum and seen the 1920’s preserved splendor, you may think I’m wrong, but the village as it stands now, for the most part, was transplanted from other locations in Burnaby to its current site. Founded in 1971, the Museum was originally known as the Heritage Village. At that time it was just a 4.3 acre site with a small number of displays, which included the only building that originated on the location of the Burnaby Village Museum: the 1922 home of the Bateman family, today known as Elworth. For 40 years it’s been the hard work of curators, Burnaby City staff and historicists to preserve buildings and their contents from the 1920’s, and make them seem that they were always part of the little village where they currently stand, right in the heart of Burnaby.
