European Festival at Swangard Stadium

by Sheliza Mitha

European Festival 2012Contest Opportunity!

This year, explore Europe without the arduous security checks, annoying jetlag and high costs of air travel.  How?  The 15th Annual European Festival at Burnaby’s Swangard Stadium on May 26th offers the perfect way to celebrate and experience Europe at your doorstep.

Previously held at the Scandinavian Community Centre, this year’s festival proves to be bigger than ever with its new venue at Swangard Stadium, which offers thousands of covered seats in the Grand Stand from which to comfortably watch all the entertainment (just in case the weather gets a bit too hot or wet).

Representing the four “corners” of Europe, the festival brings together some 30 countries in this daylong cultural festival of food, fun and performances.  Some of the new participating countries at this year’s event are Azerbaijan and Slovenia.  France is also making a return to the festival after being away for several years.

Play On! Burnaby

by Jonathan

Play On Burnaby - 1Contest Opportunity

What is more uniquely Canadian than Street Hockey? We all experienced it, whether it be moving our rickety nets for passing cars, or digging through our neighbors lawns searching for our plastic orange ball; (hey, we only had one and they were like 2 bucks each at Wal-Mart), street hockey was a way for kids of all ages, and both genders to bond, and to learn to love the game of hockey. Burnaby Village Museum – Opening Day

by Fanny

Burnaby Village Museum opening day, 2012While Cinco de Mayo was in full effect this past Saturday, those in attendance at the Don Wrigley Carousel Pavillion at Burnaby Village Museum were having a celebration of a different sort, commemorating their opening day as well as the 100th anniversary of the iconic C.W. Parker Carousel #119 and the Interurban Tram 1223. Each person in attendance at the opening reception had their own connections to the carousel, and it was amazing to say in the least to meet these individuals and hear their stories. Each of the horses have a story, and a sponsor behind it. Continue reading →

Art is Alive Among Burnaby’s Youth

by Sheliza Mitha

Arts Alive - 1Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.

Judging from my recent visit at the Burnaby Art Gallery (BAG), it quickly became clear that our youth is being dutifully nurtured and prepared for their future – especially when it comes to the artistic genre.  From now through May 20th, the BAG is showcasing some of the inspiring and awe-inspiring artwork created by Burnaby students from grades eight through 12 in the annual Arts Alive exhibit. Mind Over Mountain Adventure Race

by Jonathan

Mind Over Mountain Adventure Race - 1 Contest Opportunity

Have you ever wanted to be a survival person? We all watch the Discovery Channel and look at these crazy guys with beards, wearing spandex, eating mushrooms from the ground and drinking rain water, and we think one of two things:

First, “I am really craving Doritos right now.” Then secondly, “I wonder if I could do that.”

Well, it may not be as hardcore as a Bear Grylls escapade, but the Atmosphere Mind Over Mountain Adventure Race, or MOMAR, is a great way to test your physical endurance and have fun with a large group of amateur adventurers. Continue reading →

SFU Choir at the Movies

by Lima Al-Azzeh

SFU Choir at the moviesThe SFU Choir has come a long way since its inception 20 years ago. In fact, in a recent conversation with Choir Conductor Melissa Ratcliff, who’s been heading up the choir for the past 5 years, she says the choir has remarkably become a community-driven initiative, rather than a strictly SFU bound group. This year, the SFU Choir celebrates its 20th anniversary season, a milestone and testament to the enduring passion of its participants over the years. Continue reading →

Private Tasting at Cactus Club

by Lima Al-Azzeh

Cactus Club Lougheed, Lobby
There are chains, there are franchises, and then there’s the Cactus Club, a restaurant that has received the magic touch from famous chef Rob Feenie – the fairy Godmother, or Godfather rather, it seems, of casual dining.

Together with the great team at Tourism Burnaby and with my fellow bloggers, we were invited to the Cactus Club in North Burnaby (Lougheed Highway) for a rare treat: a private tasting of Chef Feenie’s signature dishes along with a carefully curated selection of wine pairings. Lucky us! Continue reading →
